Alex Mejia is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Music class of 2015 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in Jazz Studies. He has studied with great jazz musicians such as Rodney Whitaker, Perry Hughes, Randy Napolean, Ettienne Charles, Reggie Thomas, and Diego Rivera. Alex had the pleasure of performing with MSU Jazz Orchestra I, MSU Jazz Orchestra II, MSU Jazz Octet III and as the leading member of the JAMM Scholarship Quartet. He has performed with artists including, Jon Faddis, Peter Bernstein, Jeff Hamilton, and Antonio Hart.

 

Alex Mejia has been a music educator for six years beginning in 2012 as an Alumni of the East Lansing Highschool Jazz band; He gave master classes and directed the big band in rehearsals as well as taking on private guitar students.  He continued teaching privately for five years until 2017 when Alex became a member of the faculty at 4/4 School of Music Oregon. At 4/4, he began teaching piano, guitar, music theory and ear training.

Alex Mejia moved to New York City in 2018 in pursuit of a career as a musician, composer, and writer; He composes and performs for his solo project under the name A.F. Mejia and with the afternooners, a Portland Oregon based songwriter collective.
