Maya began her piano studies at the age of five, and began her vocal studies beginning in high school, when she began singing as a cantor at her church. This sparked an interest in sacred music which led to her enrollment at the University of Notre Dame where she studied voice and organ as she pursued a degree in music history.
Since relocating to Brooklyn about a year ago, Maya has been working as a music director, church singer, and organist as well as teaching piano and voice lessons. Her teaching philosophy stresses developing an emotional and narrative understanding of music while instilling a solid, relaxed technique. Maya believes that first and foremost, students should experience the joy of music; technical skill then helps to free the fingers and voice to express themselves in their playing and singing.
