Pravin Thompson is an International Jazz Guitarist based in New York City. Originally from South Plainfield New Jersey, Pravin began studying guitar at age 10 after years of watching his older brother play. He quickly began playing in local rock bands and school ensembles where he was first exposed to jazz. After graduating, Pravin attended New Jersey City University and majored in Jazz studies. Through the school he has performed with Allen Farnham, Joel Weiskopf, Paul Meyers, Nate Eklund, Bob Malach, and Pete McGuinness. Pravin also plays in many large ensembles. Frequently subbing in bands such as Big Beat, Erica Seguine & Shannon Baker Jazz Orchestra, Pangean Orchestra, New Generation Theater Company, and Brillbird/Jessica Ackerley: Double Trio ensemble.
Pravin Thompson has also been a dedicated music educator for the last 8 years. He began teaching formally in 2010 as a substitute guitar instructor at Rutherford Music Exchange, Parkside Conservatory, and Little Ferry Music Gallery. He began teaching full-time at Rutherford Music Exchange in 2012 and continued to teach there until 2018. Pravin teaches Guitar (beginner to advanced), Ukulele, beginning piano, beginner-advanced theory, Jazz Theory, Composition, and improvisation. Pravin also substitute teaches at PS. 11 Afterschool Rock Band Program. There he instructs students on playing as an ensemble, learning parts, preparing for recitals, and accompanying students in recitals. Pravin Thompson has taught many different age groups ranging from 5 to adult students. He has taught beginning guitar lessons, and has worked with advanced students preparing them for College level auditions. He strives to continue bettering his teaching and finding more ways of connecting and inspiring students through music.
