Originally from Bali, Indonesia, Zerlina Devi started her musical journey at the age of 5. Although growing up classically trained, she was always singing along to the sounds of Jazz being played out of her father’s car stereo and after a couple of years of studying Jazz, she was soon performing all over the country.
While living in Jakarta, she helped form Sailendra Sextet who won first place at the highly praised Indonesian Jazz competition “Jazz Goes to Campus,” where she also received Best Pianist Award. Around that time she also had the chance to play at Java Jazz Festival alongside celebrated musicians such as George Benson, Joey DeFranceso and many more.
In 2012, she received a full scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music and decided to move across the world. Her mentors there included Aaron Goldberg, Vijay Iyer, Billy Childs, Bob Winter, Joanne Brackeen among others. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Music Degree in Performance and Jazz Composition in 2015. That very same year, she was given the Clare Fischer Award by the Jazz Composition Department.
During her time in Boston, she had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Ravi Coltrane, Salt-N-Pepa and many more. Zerlina continued to flourish and develop her playing, collaborating with various local artists that eventually led to her winning Hip-Hop Act of the Year from New England Music Awards, Hip-Hop Group of the Year from New England Urban Music Awards and Jazz Rising Stars Award from Rockport Jazz Festival.
Zerlina is very passionate about music education and has been teaching students of all ages both privately and in group settings for over 6 years.
